What do you mean you’re not at the BDE? You dream of a career in rap and you don’t even take rap lessons macroeconomics ? Serious error. Top eight of the best sideboards for future rappers.
NABIL OF PNL
PARIS-NANTERRE UNIVERSITY
In the duo who sang “Le monde ou rien” while importing cloud rap to France, we ask for the little brother, Nabil. By chance or coincidence, he started rapping at the age of 18, shortly before joining Paris-Nanterre (so much inspiration, this daily journey aboard the RER D between Corbeil-Essonnes and Nanterre…). Indeed, the hunk in the ponytail studies business there for four years following a Bac STMG, but does not complete his master’s degree due to lack of means. No problem: since then, PNL has regularly demonstrated its marketing genius (investing a minimum of its cash flow to create maximum buzz), a discipline that has disappeared from the commercial divisions of the majors.

ORELSAN
EM NORMANDY
Mention very well for Orelsan, thanks to whom myriads of 90’s teenagers in Reebok sweatshirts took revenge on their father’s career dreams. We know the story (exhaustively revealed by his little brother in the documentary Never show this to anyone). Initially a lazy student at the public high school in Caen, Aurélien Cotentin, son of a teacher and a college director, enrolls in co’ school to please his dad. He might have majored in Entrepreneurship, Logistics or Principles of Business Strategy, but prefers to make vocals in his basement (even though he graduated in 2004) with the future most talented producer of French rap, Skread, whom he met there in 2000 and who would launch his career. A course costing 30,000 francs rather well reinvested, then.

AND THE CONTROLLER
HARVARD
Rapper-producer Jeffrey Atkins, aka Ja Rule, author of Venni, Vetti, Vecci (his first album, published in 1999) has not always been successful. In 2017, he embarked on the lousy Fyre Festival (but yes, remember, an event in the Bahamas for which Tyga fans had to pay between $400 and $11,000 and which turned out to be a huge fiasco). Associated with his organizer Billy McFarland, Ja Rule was finally exonerated. But, determined to learn from his mistakes, he enrolled in Harvard in 2021, and obtained a degree in marketing and management. For $1,000 and a computer (he takes his training online), you too can become a management pro in four weeks, and avoid getting involved in your entrepreneur friend’s twisted projects (even if the Patagonia jacket would have already must have aroused your suspicions).

FONKY FLAV’
PARIS-PANTHÉON-ASSAS
You don’t become the Mazarin of French Left Bank rap without working on your classics a little. Fonky Flav’, aka Antoine Guéna, obtained a master’s degree in marketing and communications before filling the rooms alongside Alpha Wann, Darryl Zeuja, Nekfeu, Sneazzy with the group 1995 (pronounce “one, nine, nine, five”, at the risk that the trendy generation of this magazine confuses you with Laurent Ruquier – note from the editor) of which he managed, among other things, the administration. What else ? He launched the Panenka Music label, distributed by Wagram and signed the rapper Georgio, the group Thérapie Taxi… and PLK (he is at the origin of the success story behind his album ENNA, in 2021). Shall we give you his 06?

DAVID BANNER
SOUTHERN UNIVERSITY
After graduating from Province High School in 1992, Lavell Adrian Crump, known as David Banner (yes, like Hulk, of whom he is a fan) joined the renowned Southern University where he became president of the Student Association. Whether he does gangsta rap or is the head of the BDE, the Banner from Mississippi embodies American success. Rapper and producer, he began his career with Crooked Lettaz, a hip-hop duo he formed with his friend Brad Franklin. They released only one album, Grey Skiesin 1999. He went solo right following, releasing a first album (Them Firewater Boyz, Vol. 1.)signs a contract with Universal then hits with Mississippi: The Album – the major invests heavily in the gangsta image and it works. Since then, he has sold sounds for advertising and video games such as Saints Row.

DAMSO
REVEREND KIM UNIVERSITY
Well-defined concept albums, well-rehearsed PR stunts… All that doesn’t come out of nowhere. Born in Kinshasa in 1992, he fled the country with his parents (his mother is a sociologist, his father, a cardiologist) and grew up in Belgium. Interested in his roots and in marketing, he returned to the DRC in 2014, where he enrolled at Reverend Kim University. There he took courses in economics, marketing and psychology. Back in the Flat Country, he uses this well-set tumble in his trash’intello rap (perfect for seeing his punchlines copied and pasted into Insta bio). Spotted by the king of comm’ rap Booba, while he sleeps in the streets of Brussels, the Dems has followed the opposite path to his mentor: when he is not on promotion, it is not on social networks, and bohemian life crossing Europe in a campervan.

GUIZMO
BLAISE PASCAL UNIVERSITY
It started off pretty well for the guiziouzou from Villeneuve-la-Garenne, whose real name is Lamine Diakité. A degree in economics with honors, and a Master 1 at Blaise Pascal University. What did he learn from the French mathematician? Probably that “the self is hateful”. After an adventure that ended moderately well with the Nekfeu crew (a few childish clashes), the rapper continued rapping regarding pillave and the life of an alcoholic in his twenties, hanging out in the mean streets, in Ballantine’s and cans of beer. ‘HK, or bars stinking of cigarettes and the depression of dirty results in the French style of games. What did his studies teach him? That esteem success is not always commercial success. So what’s the point of being a clear-headed economist, right?

MEHDI MAIZI
SCHEME
10 years before becoming the Head of Hip-Hop at Apple France, the popular rap journalist on YouTube graduated with a master’s degree in marketing from the Skema business school in Lille. He says he learned a lot of things there. The most important? For this workaholic: know how to celebrate! The one who knows all the punchlines of your favorite rappers by heart first officiated at the duke’s microphone – OKLM Radio. Then, following appearances by Deezer, Binge Audio, broadcasts for Red Bull, he won the holy grail with his show The code for Apple Music. A long format of interviews with big names and rookies of French-speaking rap in the most comm school company on the web.
