Carter Center observes Venezuela elections with 17 officials in four states of the country

Caracas, Jul 28 (EFE).- The head of the Carter Center’s electoral observation mission, Jennie Lincoln, reported on Sunday that the organization deployed a total of 17 electoral experts in three states of Venezuela, in addition to Caracas, for the presidential elections that are in full swing in the Caribbean nation.

“Here we have a mission of 17 people, electoral experts from 11 countries. Our mission is limited, we are going to focus on electoral administration, and we also have observers in three places in the country, but we do not have a full deployment,” Lincoln explained at the beginning of the observation process at a voting center in western Caracas.

He said that electoral experts are in Caracas, as well as in the states of Zulia, Barinas and Carabobo.

Lincoln explained that, according to the memorandum of understanding signed with the National Electoral Council (CNE) of Venezuela, the mission has guarantees to access the entire voting process, move around the country and be able to speak with the media and citizens.

“We are here to work, to evaluate the electoral process, to assess whether it meets international standards,” he said.

He also said that next Tuesday there will be a press conference to offer the first results of the observation process, so he insisted that his work on Sunday will focus on gathering information on the voting process.

The Carter Center has observed several elections in Venezuela, including an expert mission for the 2021 regional and local elections.

More than 21 million people are called to vote in these elections, who will be able to choose between 10 candidates, including the current president, Nicolás Maduro, and the standard-bearer of the majority opposition, Edmundo González Urrutia.
