The Netflix thriller “Carry-On,” released in December 2024, became an instant hit, captivating viewers with it’s suspenseful plot set in the bustling Los Angeles airport, LAX. While the film’s setting feels incredibly real, the truth might surprise you: it wasn’t filmed at LAX at all. Rather, the production team cleverly transformed a decommissioned airport terminal in New Orleans into a convincing replica of the iconic LA hub.
The chosen location was Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport (MSY). A once-busy terminal, now abandoned since November 2019, provided the perfect backdrop for the film. director Jaume Collet-serra marveled at the opportunity, calling it “incredibly lucky” to have the entire space at their disposal.

The set design team, led by Diane Lederman, went above and beyond to recreate the LAX experience. They renovated the old MSY spaces, incorporating iconic details and even partnering with local Los Angeles brands like Lemonade and Pinkberry to add authenticity. To further enhance the realism, they created replicas of airport essentials, such as TSA scanners, and secured hundreds of pieces of actual luggage from travel Pro. Actress Sofia Carson,who plays Nora in the film,expressed her excitement at being able to film in a real airport setting,stating,“The whole airport was transformed to really look and feel like LAX. It was amazing to literally bring to life this film, inside of an entire airport in New Orleans.”
