CARREFOUR – The distributor Carrefour announced on Friday August 19 that it had decided to withdraw the far-right weekly from sale Rivarolwhich was deprived of its approval by the Joint Commission for Publications and Press Agencies (CPPAP).

“Following the decision of the Joint Commission for Publications and Press Agencies of the Ministry of Culture not to renew the registration certificate issued for the Rivarol publication for the benefit of the press aid scheme, Carrefour made the decision not to sell this weekly anymore”the group told AFP.

Founded in 1951, Rivarol (named after the counter-revolutionary Antoine de Rivarol) is a flagship publication of the French far right. The newspaper saw its approval withdrawn in May by the CPPAP, a measure which abolishes tax advantages and reduced postal rates enjoyed by newspapers.

Its director of publication, Jérôme Bourbon (Fabrice of his real first name), has been convicted fifteen times, in particular for incitement to hatred, contestation of crimes against humanity and racist insults.

Last December, he was sentenced for contesting a crime against humanity and incitement to hatred against Jews because of a video in which he spoke the Vel d’Hiv roundup.

“Racist, anti-Semitic, xenophobic and Holocaust-denying rags should no longer have the right of citizenship”

He asserted in particular that Marshal Pétain had “always opposed to the slightest persecution or attack whatsoever on French Jews”.

In March, some thirty historians and personalities, including Beate and Serge Klarsfeld, defenders of the memory of the deportees from France, had protested against the “indirect public aid” from which benefited Rivarol.

The representative council of Jewish institutions in France (Crif) welcomed Carrefour’s decision. “Racist, anti-Semitic, xenophobic and Holocaust-denying rags should no longer have the right of citizenship, in distribution as on social networks”said the institution on Twitter.

The CPPAP is a body composed equally of representatives of the State and press professionals. It is responsible for deciding whether publications are eligible for the economic regime of the press, according to a certain number of criteria.
