Initially criticized on social networks, the French brand Carrefour in Morocco is now in the crosshairs of the BDS movement (boycott divestment and sanctions) in the Kingdom. In recent days, several calls to demonstrate have been broadcast by the various pages of the BDS movement in Morocco, calling for a mobilization in front of the various stores of the French franchise in Morocco, supported here by the Label’Vie group of Zouhair Bennani. The last calls were from this weekend.

Implicated: supposed support of the retail franchise in Israel, involved in the current violence perpetrated in the Gaza Strip but also in the West Bank. Critics of French-branded supermarkets cite in particular the support provided by the group’s branches in Israel, such as Maale Adumim, a town in the West Bank, where Carrefour intends to open a future supermarket.

Also in the viewfinder is the company Electra Consumar Products, owner of the French group’s franchised stores in Israel, which has recently been increasing its publicity efforts around its distribution of foodstuffs for the benefit of Israeli soldiers.

Carrefour is not the first group, with a global presence, to find itself in the sights of boycotters in Morocco: before it, it was also the McDonald’s fast-food franchise which had paid the price for McDonald’s actions in Israel , in favor of IDF soldiers.

Faced with this situation, the Moroccan company which owns the McDonald’s franchise tried to justify itself, through aggressive communication, by loosening its purse strings to flood the Moroccan press.
