Carouge (GE)Call to “massacre” elected officials at a gaming stand

An attraction, at the Vogue de Carouge, created controversy on social networks. The targeted politicians had, however, given their consent.

The stand and its banner where one might read ““Massacre them, there will always be enough”.

“Massacre them, there will always be enough.” This is the inscription that appeared above a stand last weekend at La Vogue in Carouge. Instead of the traditional pyramids of tin cans from a massacre game, there were photos of Carouge municipal councilors.

Incitement to violence

What arouse controversy on Monday on social networks, described “Blick“. A surfer protested: “We teach children to shoot elected officials on the City Council. Nice. The shooting of Zug is a long way off (editor’s note: a man had killed 13 people in the precincts of the cantonal parliament, on September 27, 2001)”. The mayor of Geneva, Marie-Barbey Chappuis (Le Centre), castigated a humor “at the very least doubtful”. “Political humor, yes,” continued State Councilor Antonio Hodgers (The Greens). But normalizing the bashing (of politicians) is not ideal.” Others, including former Geneva national councilor Manuel Tornare (PS), encouraged people to file a complaint, judging that the banner was “shocking” and incited violence.

Elected agree

The Carouge elected officials have calmed things down. “We were asked for permission to use our photo and we gave our agreement, underlines the socialist Dominique von Burg. It’s not very tasteful, but that doesn’t bother me that much.” Mayor Sonja Molinari (The Greens) believes that it is above all the text of the banner that poses a problem: “These words are out of place, especially vis-à-vis people who are committed to the municipality”. That said, she does not expect the City to file a complaint in this case.

“Disproportionate” reactions

For his part, the president of La Vogue de Carouge, Daniel Mouchet, confirmed that all the municipal councilors had subscribed to the operation, organized by a shooting company, “except for one elected official, who did not want to see his photo exposed but said they were in agreement in principle. The text of the banner appeared on a photo attached to the email sent to municipal councillors.

“There had already been an identical massacre game in 1986, we decided to do it once more, that’s it; it was a simple amusement, puts the boss of Vogue into perspective. I can understand that it shocks, and I respect it. Nevertheless, I find some reactions disproportionate. It makes me wonder that we can’t take things in the second degree, sometimes.
