Caroline Wozniacki defeated Jessika Ponchet 6-3, 6-2 in the third round of the 2024 US Open on Saturday night (August 31), matching her achievement in 2023, when the Dane reached the fourth round after a three-year absence.

“I’m really happy to get through today,” Wozniacki said. “He (Ponchet) played an unusual game. It was a little bit difficult to read his game,” she was quoted as saying by the tournament’s official website.

On paper, the experience gap between the two players is stark. Wozniacki is a two-time runner-up US Open and held the world No. 1 ranking for 71 weeks. His opponent is currently ranked 119th in the world. Ponchet lost in the first round of US Open qualifying five times, but bounced back this year to earn his first place in the main draw.

Ponchet reached the third round by defeating Zheng Saisai of China in her opening match, and won by walkover when No. 4 seed and 2022 Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina retired from their second-round match.

In the fourth round, Wozniacki will face an opponent she has never faced before: 22nd seed Beatriz Haddad Maia of Brazil or 15th seed Anna Kalinskaya. (M-3)
