Caroline Van Linthout: From Municipal Councilor to Exiting Politics – A Story of Disillusionment and Change

In the fall of 2017, a citizens’ list was created with the aim of “building a democratic and participatory political program”. It was then that Caroline Van Linthout joined the movement and has been, since 2018, municipal councilor in Visé under the colors of Visons Demain.

But following disappointments and disillusionment, the green elected official, “to remain true to herself, to her convictions and to her values”, decided to leave politics. His functions will end on December 18, during the municipal council.

“When I joined Visons Demain in 2018, I sincerely believed that it was possible to do politics differently,” she confides. “Today, I realize that this is not the case , even at the local level; all parties, already at the municipal level, operate by color rather than by heart,” she concludes.

I no longer want to give my energy to politics.

The advisor particularly regrets having seen her movement “reduced to the role of critic without really being”. This caused the elected official to “lose her enthusiasm” and no longer wanted to “give her energy to politics”.

A new advisor

If all goes well, Jean-François Verjans will take over. An environmental activist since the 1980s, he was, among other things, an advisor to the CPAS from 1994 to 2006 and a trainer at Forem until 2016.

Retired, he will be able to work to “support and defend initiatives which develop citizen participation, which engage us in the ecological transition and which humanize the living environment of citizens”.

“I will be 72 years old a few days following the council,” declares Jean-François Verjans. It’s a surprising birthday present”. And as the ecologist has “always played a role in the shadows of Visé politics”, his new position as municipal councilor “will represent the same militancy… in a slightly more visible way”.
