His favorite quote:
“To hate someone is to offer them the privilege of existing in themselves. It is preparing a seat for him and warming the leather to welcome him. It means having the certainty of always finding it where you put it. In its place ? In his head and in his heart. In a cozy nest scented with gall. To hate someone is to assign them a place in the most prestigious place of their self. »
Why this book?
- Because the plot of this thriller gets off to a flying start and that it is very difficult not to reveal all the subtleties, which would be extremely harmful for the future reader. Of course, we are right in the middle of a family story: that of a wealthy blended family, which you might find common to many other books. Still, I found this thriller unlike any I’ve read recently.
- Because in this story, there is a before and an following a major event. Then, each of the chapters is narrated by one of the four main characters. And some are really hateful as can be. I really appreciated the way the author, Morgane Montoriol, built her characters, both on their personal history and on their psychology.
- Because an additional singularity is to have planted the decorations of the plot in Savannah, capital of the State of Georgia, far from what we find in terms of black literature like New York or Los Angeles.
- Because it is finely crafted, details are not left out randomly, the writing is very pleasant to read. Honestly, I didn’t feel any negative or even mixed points through my reading.
- Because if you like to immerse yourself as much as possible in a story and that you appreciate that it is very dark and well twisted, you will love like me this second thriller by Morgane Montoriol that I can only strongly recommend to you!
The essentials in 2 minutes
The plot. Keith believes he hit the jackpot by pairing up and moving in with the mayor of Savanah and his son, along with his daughter Idaho. While they seem to be founding an ideal blended family, an extremely brutal event will serve as the starting point for the narration of their stories.
Characters. Four main ones: On the one hand, the mayor of Savannah, Church and his son, Coyote and on the other, Keith and his daughter, Idaho.
Places. United States (Savannah, city in the state of Georgia).
The time. Contemporary
The author. Morgane Montoriol was born in 1987 in Paris. After living in the United States for fifteen years, she now divides her time between Paris and the southern United States. Her first novel, Freckles was released in 2020.
This book was read with a lot of dread. While I thought I was slipping slowly into a psychological thriller, the first chapter had the gift of freezing my blood and suggesting a great reading moment. The sequel did not demonstrate the opposite, maintaining a palpable tension at every moment.
