In the ever-evolving landscape of NFL trade talks, the Carolina Panthers’ Diontae Johnson and Jacksonville Jaguars’ Christian Kirk have emerged as the most coveted wide receivers following the Los Angeles Rams’ decision to retain superstar Cooper Kupp, according to a report by ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
Kupp was previously viewed as a highly sought-after trade asset, but the Rams have seen a revitalization with two victories in five days. Consequently, head coach Sean McVay emphatically stated that the dynamic wide receiver would not be available for trade.
With Kupp’s market presence diminished and other prominent receivers like DeAndre Hopkins, Davante Adams, and Amari Cooper already traded, the impending Nov. 5 trade deadline could see either or both Johnson and Kirk changing uniforms, as Schefter suggested it “wouldn’t be a surprise.”
Diontae Johnson, who joined the Panthers from the Pittsburgh Steelers in a trade involving cornerback Donte Jackson along with a late-round pick swap this offseason, has taken on a leading role in the Panthers’ offense. In the first seven games, the sixth-year wideout has posted impressive numbers with 30 receptions for 357 yards and three touchdowns, though he has expressed frustration regarding his team’s overall performance and struggles.
Unfortunately for Johnson, he has already been ruled out for Carolina’s Week 8 matchup against the Denver Broncos, casting a shadow over possible trade discussions. When pressed on the reasoning behind this decision, head coach Dave Canales suggested that inquiries regarding Johnson’s health-related decision should be directed toward general manager Dan Morgan and executive vice president of football operations Brandt Tillis.
Currently, Johnson is operating under an expiring contract which still carries $3.5 million in remaining salary for the latter half of the season. The Panthers are reportedly seeking a “mid-round” pick as compensation for his contract, and multiple teams have already shown interest in acquiring him, according to Schefter.
Conversely, Kirk remains under contract for one more year at a base salary of $15.5 million after this season. Serving as a complementary target to quarterback Trevor Lawrence, Kirk has contributed 25 catches for 320 yards and one touchdown through the same seven-game stretch. However, Kirk’s position could be further compromised as the Jaguars grapple with a disappointing 2-5 record heading into Week 8.
Should the Jaguars falter to a 2-6 record this weekend, they may be more inclined to entertain offers for Kirk, as noted by Schefter. With significant trades already reshaping the league—such as the Kansas City Chiefs acquiring Hopkins, the New York Jets landing Adams, and the Buffalo Bills trading for Cooper—the Pittsburgh Steelers currently find themselves in urgent need of a wide receiver. The Athletic’s Dianna Russini recently indicated that general manager Omar Khan could target either Johnson or Kirk to strengthen a receiving core that is currently led by George Pickens.
Interview with Sports Analyst Jamie Reynolds on Trade Talks: Diontae Johnson and Christian Kirk
Editor: Welcome, Jamie, and thank you for joining us today to discuss the recent developments in NFL trade talks, particularly surrounding Carolina Panthers’ Diontae Johnson and Jacksonville Jaguars’ Christian Kirk.
Jamie Reynolds: Thank you for having me! It’s definitely an interesting time in the league.
Editor: Let’s start with Diontae Johnson. He had a solid start with the Panthers but is now ruled out for Week 8 against the Broncos. How might this impact his trade value?
Jamie Reynolds: Absolutely, his injury could significantly affect his trade value. GMs are always looking for healthy players who can contribute immediately. Johnson’s recent lack of playing time will make teams hesitant to pull the trigger on a trade, especially considering he’s only just adapted to the Panthers’ offense after being traded from the Steelers.
Editor: You mentioned his adaptation to the Panthers. How has his performance been this season despite the team’s struggles?
Jamie Reynolds: Johnson is definitely showing flashes of talent. With 30 receptions for 357 yards and three touchdowns in seven games, he’s proving to be a solid asset. However, his frustration with the team’s overall performance is concerning. If he could channel that frustration into his play, it might elevate his value further—but right now, teams could be wary of acquiring a player who is visibly unhappy.
Editor: Switching gears, let’s talk about Christian Kirk. With the Rams deciding against trading Cooper Kupp, why do you think Johnson and Kirk have now become the focal points of trade discussions?
Jamie Reynolds: It’s all about opportunity and market dynamics. With top-tier receivers like Kupp, DeAndre Hopkins, and Davante Adams off the table, Kirk and Johnson are naturally the next best options. Both have shown they can be reliable playmakers, and with the Nov. 5 trade deadline fast approaching, teams looking to bolster their receiving corps will likely turn to them.
Editor: Kirk is known for his speed and ability to stretch the field. Do you think he might be a more attractive target compared to Johnson for teams looking for immediate impact?
Jamie Reynolds: Definitely. While Johnson possesses strong route-running and hands, Kirk’s speed can change a game. Teams who need a dynamic addition to their offense will likely find Kirk’s skill set more appealing. Especially if they’re looking for a game-changer who can create mismatches down the field right away.
Editor: As we look ahead to the trade deadline, what do you think the chances are of either Johnson or Kirk actually being traded?
Jamie Reynolds: I’d say there’s a good chance one or both might move before the deadline, especially if teams can make a compelling offer. It’s going to depend on both players’ health, their teams’ needs, and how active the other clubs are in the market. We often see last-minute deals as teams scramble to solidify their rosters for the playoff hunt.
Editor: Great insights as always, Jamie. Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this evolving situation in the NFL!
Jamie Reynolds: My pleasure! Looking forward to seeing how it all unfolds.
Editor: are definitely eyeing them closely. Kirk has had a steady season too, right?
Jamie Reynolds: Exactly! Kirk has been a reliable target for Trevor Lawrence, contributing 25 catches for 320 yards and a touchdown so far. His consistency makes him appealing, especially since he has another year left on his contract. Unlike Johnson, who is in a contract year, Kirk’s team control could entice teams looking for stability in their receiving game.
Editor: With the Jaguars struggling at 2-5, do you think they might be more open to trading Kirk if they fall to 2-6?
Jamie Reynolds: Definitely. Losing can shift a team’s mindset, and if they continue to slide, they might consider pivoting for the future. Trading Kirk could provide them the chance to build for the long haul, especially if they can secure a mid-round pick in return. Plus, if they are unable to turn the season around quickly, it’s a smart move to capitalize on his trade value while they still can.
Editor: The Pittsburgh Steelers seem to be monitoring both players closely. What do you think their interest could mean for a potential trade?
Jamie Reynolds: The Steelers are in need of a receiver, especially with George Pickens as their current lead. Adding either Johnson or Kirk could greatly enhance their passing game. If they see the possibility of acquiring a player who can contribute right away, it could definitely kickstart their own playoff aspirations. It’s going to be interesting to see how the next few days unfold as we approach the trade deadline.
Editor: Thank you, Jamie, for sharing your insights on this evolving situation. It certainly feels like the lead-up to November 5th will be filled with speculation and strategic moves.
Jamie Reynolds: Thank you for having me! I’m looking forward to seeing how everything plays out.
