New York Fashion Week saw an exhilarating moment as creative director Wes Gordon unveiled Carolina Herrera’s Spring/Summer 2025 collection, a harmonious blend of classic codes and a fresh, youthful spirit. Drawing inspiration from the brand’s rich history of bold prints and vibrant hues, Gordon designed a collection that was both a nod to the past and a step toward a contemporary, carefree future.
At the heart of the collection is the striking interplay between black and white, punctuated with bursts of bright yellow, a hallmark of the Carolina Herrera brand since the 1980s. This season, Gordon’s designs highlighted a meticulous attention to graphic glamour, emphasizing a single exclamation point in each look – a stylistic decision that echoes the house’s legacy of bold statements, both in fashion and fragrance.
Opening with a study in monochrome, the runway colors quickly transformed into a palette of four carefully selected bold hues. This strategic use of color highlighted Gordon’s quest for perfection in each piece, where every cut, silhouette and shade is chosen with meticulous precision. Models adorned with yellow roses in their hair circled around Isamu Noguchi’s iconic Sunken Garden installation, the sculpture’s concentric circles creating a playful dialogue with the collection’s polka dot patterns.
While the brand’s DNA remains firmly rooted in the opulence and elegance introduced by Carolina Herrera 40 years ago, Gordon’s vision is decidedly modern and youthful. Since taking the reins of the brand in 2019, he has infused the house with a sexy freshness that speaks to a new generation without losing sight of the sophisticated heritage of the Herrera name.
This season, this blend of tradition and modernity was evident in the range of stretch jersey dresses that closed the show. From a tie-neck midi dress to a floral halterneck with a flowy, swimsuit-worthy cut, these pieces were both comfortable and chic, representing a new approach to luxury wardrobe. Gordon’s playful touch in tailoring was evident in boxy, oversized black boyfriend jackets paired with white shorts and single-breasted collarless embroidered jackets paired with capri pants, adding a youthful, cheeky touch to the neat silhouettes from the collection.
The show, which took place at 28 Liberty Street, with its Noguchi sunken garden and Jean Dubuffet trees at street level, was a perfect blend of old-world charm and contemporary allure. Gordon honored Herrera’s codes with designs paying homage to the house’s signature extravagant sleeves, such as a black one-sleeve cotton dress, and an array of splashed polka dots on a crochet mini dress and a bandeau top and skirt set in elegant knit.
But the collection isn’t just about daytime glamour. Gordon proved he hasn’t forgotten the art of creating stunning evening wear. Standout pieces include a strapless black-on-white polka dot dress, with ruffles at the dropped waist and a full skirt, a look Gordon describes as “looking for wow.” The dress, like the entire collection, is a testament to Gordon’s ability to balance tradition with a dynamic, avant-garde spirit.
Carolina Herrera’s Spring/Summer 2025 collection is more than just a seasonal offering: it’s a celebration of optimism, color and the playfulness of modern femininity. Wes Gordon’s vision for the brand continues to evolve, embracing a new, youthful sensibility while remaining true to the codes that have defined Herrera for decades. It’s a refreshing approach to luxury that feels both timeless and utterly current, a perfect reflection of the woman Carolina Herrera herself envisioned: bold, beautiful and unafraid to make a statement.
