Carnival in Ebensee: development aid for the neighboring community

Four meters long, twelve kilograms in weight and equipped with 250 ties (hopefully cut off by hand by their victims) – this is what the tattered flag looks like, with which the Ebensee carnival friends thank their neighboring community Traunkirchen and thus, albeit unspokenly, provide some “development aid”. .

Here are the details: From the southern shore of Lake Traun, where the foolish time is celebrated particularly extensively, an artistically designed Ebensee tattered flag fluttered onto the Traunkirchner town square, where it was immediately hoisted in front of the municipal office. The solemn ceremony resembled an act of state. Traunkirchen’s mayor Christoph Schragl and his Ebensee counterpart Sabine Promberger were there, as were the two deputy mayors, the Traunkirchner carnival prince couple, guard girls and a musical combo from the municipal office. Six graces from Ebensee, all of them opulently made up and wrapped in fine fur, officially handed over the tattered flag to the neighboring community.

Almost more exciting than the handover is the history of this carnival present: In the summer of 2021, the six guard girls were out and regarding in a boat on Lake Traunsee. Surprised and completely soaked by a rain shower, the gang found shelter and food in the Traunkirchen municipal office. The enthusiasm regarding the proven hospitality was so great that the Ebensee ladies said goodbye at a late hour with the promise: “Traunkirchen needs support in terms of carnival and will get a tattered flag from us.”

Said and done. Soon the sewing machines were rattling in Ebensee. 150 working hours later the magnificent piece was finished. On the front, the new heraldic animals of Traunkirchen, three high-spirited flamingos, which will replace the Traun sea swans in the future.

Also a big topic in Ebensee: The expulsion of “profil” editor Christian Rainer from the inn “Himmel”. This tavern farce, which has been the number one local call in recent weeks, naturally found a permanent place in the parade on Shrove Sunday.

At the carnival in Ebensee, the tavern activists were also in constant use. On Shrove Monday, for example, the dreaded tavern stickers went into action during the largest, most colorful and funniest Ebensee Fetzenzug in history. Globetrotter Helmut Pichler from Gosau enjoyed a delicious portion of locusts in the salt pan community and prepared himself for his next expedition with culinary delights.

But everything has an end…

… even the foolish time in the Salzkammergut. The carnival burning on the Ebensee Traunufer from 3 p.m. on Ash Wednesday is considered the final point. The very last act is the “money bag washing”, in which the completely empty wallet of the people of Ebensee in the Traun is cleaned following the “national holidays”. The only consolation for those who still haven’t had enough following these long days: it’ll start once more in just under a year.
