Carnage in the Coffee Country: Colombia Reels from Brutal Massacre

At least three people have lost their lives and five more have been injured in a new massacre in Colombia that occurred this Monday in the municipality of Toribío, in the troubled department of Caucaaccording to authorities.

The Ombudsman, Iris Marín, expressed her regret at seeing that Colombia woke up “with a new massacre, in which three people were reported dead in Toribío, Cauca.”

Massacre in Colombia occurred early this Monday

The attack was carried out at dawn by armed men in a nightclub in that town, located in an area of Colombia where dissidents of the former FARC operate, which have intensified their attacks in the region since March, along with other armed groups.

The director of the Institute of Development and Peace Studies (Indepaz), Leonardo González, indicated that this is the 55th massacre recorded in Colombia this year and the ninth in the department of Cauca.

Since 2016, 83 massacres have been committed in the department of Cauca, most of them in indigenous territory. A comprehensive prevention and protection plan is required for the department and especially for the ethnic communities,” said González.

Likewise, he recalled that during the weekend four other massacres were carried out that left a total of 12 fatalities in the departments of Norte de Santander, Santander and Valle del Cauca.

The social leaders Andrés Erazo, in the municipality of Argelia (Cauca), and Gustavo Antonio Lozada, in Tame (Arauca), which borders Venezuela, were also murdered.

Given this fact, defender Marín pointed out the need to “redouble efforts in following up on recommendations” from the Early Warning System of the organization she directs, since she considers that Colombia cannot get used to the frequency with which this type of crimes occur.
