Carlos Vives’ perspective on marriage
On December 2, Vives visited the radio station ‘Bésame’, where he addressed various topics, highlighting the surprising cultural difference in the perception of romantic separations.
The singer shared his impressions regarding how in Europe these events tend to be considered ‘something temporary’, in marked contrast to the importance that Colombian society gives to marriage.

During the interview, Vives used the example of Shakira and Gerard Piqué to illustrate this cultural contrast. He noted that, for Colombian women, marriage is sacred, and justified Shakira’s reaction to his separation from her, emphasizing that “she’s not hurt for the sake of it.”
In that sense, the singer reflected on the European perception of marital unions as something disposable, while for a woman like Shakira, the pain of children in a breakup is especially shocking.
“I was very struck by when she (Shakira) separated that, for people, in Europe or in general, they no longer value marriage. For Colombian women, for a woman like Shakira, her marriage is the most sacred thing, it is I mean, it’s not that she’s hurt just because,” the artist commented.

Shakira and media coverage: what Carlos Vives thinks
The singer also addressed the way in which the press reported Shakira’s separation and how it impacted the artist. He expressed surprise at how some media outlets considered the event a simple scandal, without acknowledging the emotional complexity behind the decision.
“They got involved with a woman who is very creative, very Barranquilla and musical. I was surprised to see how in the same press they saw it as if he was making a scandal and that’s it,” commented Vives.
According to the singer, the way the press handled the news, especially considering Shakira’s creativity and sensitivity, might be challenging for anyone. In his words, Vives highlighted her respect for the artist, calling her an “incredible” woman.
