Ferrari F1 driver Carlos Sainz was mugged outside his Milan hotel just hours following finishing on the podium at the 2023 Italian Grand Prix. As he left the Armani Hotel on Via Manzoni, Sainz was robbed of a Richard Mille watch (a model named following German tennis player Alexander Zverev worth 43 million).
A trio of men, supposedly waiting outside the hotel, ran into Sainz and stole his watch. Sainz then began the chase with his personal trainer, assisted by bystanders who witnessed the robbery. Sainz and his assistant were able to stop one of the three robbers following a chase by car and foot. The second robbery was stopped at Spigastrasse by Sainz’s manager, and the third was stopped shortly following with the help of another of Sainz’s men. Police then arrived on the scene and took the robbers, who were between 18 and 20 years old, into custody. Sainz recovered his Ferrari team-sponsored watch and returned to his hotel. Sainz wrote on social media: “As many of you already know, yesterday there was an unfortunate incident in Milan. I will,” he posted. “Thank you to everyone who helped us yesterday, the Milan Police for their quick intervention and the many messages” Richard Mille RM 67-02 – Alexander Zverev Charles Leclerc, Sainz’s Ferrari teammate last year was also robbed in the week leading up to the Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix in Italy. Leclerc stopped for a photo in the Tuscan city of Viareggio and had his Richard Mille watch (worth the same as a Sainz) stolen from his left wrist. Leclerc, who was leading the drivers’ championship ahead of Max Verstappen at the time, was with his friend and trainer Andrea Ferrari. Leclerc chased the thief, and local police launched an investigation into the incident. Swiss watchmaker Richard Mille has been a longtime sponsor of Leclerc and will become an official partner of Ferrari in 2021. That year, McLaren F1 driver Lando Norris had a Richard Mille prototype stolen from his wrist following the Euro 2020 final at Wembley Stadium.
