It was Ferrari driver Carlos Sainz who set the best time in the one and only free practice session of the Brazilian Grand Prix in 1.11.732 (Soft), the Spaniard ahead of his teammate Charles Leclerc by a tenth ( Soft) and the Mercedes of George Russell by a tenth also (Mediums).
Behind, Nico Hülkenberg, Alex Albon, Lance Stroll, Pierre Gasly, Guanyu Zhou, Logan Sargeant and Kevin Magnussen complete the top ten of this very studious session. Needless to say, the final ranking absolutely does not represent the true hierarchy.
Only one free practice session!
Sprint format requires, teams are only allowed one free practice session this weekend at Interlagos as part of the Brazilian Grand Prix. Drivers will take part directly in the qualifying session later today (7:00 p.m. Paris time) the result of which will determine the starting grid for Sunday’s main race. A very studious session
Teams had to condense the work of an entire weekend into a single practice session due to the Sprint format, which resulted in a very quiet FP1 this Friday due to the heavy workload.
The first half hour was devoted to finding the right set-up, then the teams worked on race pace, before finishing with faster runs in preparation for the qualifying session to come, when the single-seaters will then be placed under Parc Fermé regime.
All the drivers hid their game during this practice session and it is therefore impossible to establish a real hierarchy following this single hour of free practice, some not even having fitted the Soft tires on their car…
Rain expected for qualifying
The latest weather forecasts announce the arrival of rain for the qualifying session which takes place this Friday at Interlagos and which will be followed live on our site. There might therefore be surprises on the starting grid for this twentieth round of the season.
