ST. PETERSBURG — Carlos Rodón is scheduled to receive a cortisone injection in his back next week, but the Yankees left-hander says he is “definitely optimistic” that the treatment will help address a problem that doctors have labeled “chronic.”
Rodon hasn’t thrown a pitch in the majors since signing a $162 million, six-year contract in December. But when asked Friday if a possible return in July would be feasible, the pitcher declined to offer an estimated time frame for his recovery.
“I’m going to get this shot and try to pitch as soon as I can,” the pitcher said. “Whatever my body tells me. If I can pitch and come to an agreement that I can continue to pitch, then I’ll pitch. He would have thought that he would now be with the club ”.
Rodón made one preseason start for the Yankees on March 5 once morest the Braves, before being placed on the disabled list with a left forearm strain.
That injury has healed, and he’s out of pain, but he also hasn’t been able to pitch as expected at the Yankees’ facility in Tampa, Florida. Rodón said that he has been examined by three specialists and they all recommended the injection.

Rodon hasn’t pitched in the last two days and won’t be able to until several days following the injection. The lefty said he feels like he’s clocking 87-90 mph with the fastball, but admits to being erratic with control.
The Yankees entered the regular season with three of the five starters in their projected rotation on the disabled list, with Luis Severino and Frankie Montas also waived in the spring. Rodón was expected to be the second starter behind Gerrit Cole.
Rodon admits it’s been hard to watch from afar as the Bronx Bombers struggle in a rocky start to the season.
“It sucks,” he said. “I want to pitch for the New York Yankees. I want to pitch in this series [ante los Rays]. I want to be pitching, together with the boys. I want to compete. It’s hard to sit here doing nothing.”
