Carlos Alcaraz (ATP 2) suffered defeat in his first match at an ATP Masters. The winner of the last Wimbledon lost 6-7 (3/7) 6-3 6-4 to Olympic champion Alexander Zverev (7) during the first day of the red group in Turin.
Forfeited due to injury last year when he brilliantly qualified for these ATP Finals, Carlos Alcaraz nevertheless started his seventh duel with the German in an ideal manner. Stronger and more enterprising in the money time of the first set, he got himself a break point at the start of the second set.
But Zverev avoided the danger, before taking advantage of a short drop in his opponent’s power to sign the break himself. Completely revived, the winner of the 2018 and 2021 Masters then dominated the debates, even if he scared himself by blocking his left ankle in the sixth game of the deciding set.
Alcaraz, who was playing his second match of the year indoors following being knocked out at Bercy, was too passive in the last round. He can still hope to reach the semi-finals, but will have to beat the loser of the Daniil Medvedev-Andrey Rublev duel on Wednesday to continue to believe in it.
