CARLOS Alcaraz became Wimbledon champion for the second time following defeating Novak Djokovic 6-2, 6-2, and 7-6 (4), Sunday (14/7), and retained his title at the grass-court Grand Slam.

Alcaraz dropped three points from 5-4, 40/0 in the third set as Djokovic threatened to start a comeback.

However, the Spaniard held strong in the third-set tie-break to seal the match.

If Alcaraz’s 2023 five-set win over Djokovic was an epic achievement to claim his first title at the All England Club, this year’s final was dominated by the 21-year-old.

“It’s a dream for me, to win this trophy,” Alcaraz said at the trophy presentation ceremony.

“In an interview, when I was 11 or 12, I said my dream was to win Wimbledon, so I fulfilled my dream.”

“I want to keep going, but it’s an amazing feeling to play on this beautiful court and lift this amazing trophy. It’s the most beautiful tournament, the most beautiful court and the most beautiful trophy,” he continued.

With his victory in 2 hours and 27 minutes, Alcaraz became only the second man in the Open Era to win his first four Grand Slam finals — Roger Federer won his first seven.

He also became the sixth man in the Open Era to win the Roland Garros-Wimbledon doubles in the same year, joining Rod Laver, Bjorn Borg, Rafael Nadal, Federer and Djokovic in that elite list.

“I think fighting, believing,” Alcaraz said when asked regarding how he managed to win Roland Garros and Wimbledon back-to-back.

“It is a great honor for me to be part of the players who have reached Roland Garros and Wimbledon in the same year. They are great champions.”

“I don’t consider myself a champion yet, not like them, but I will keep it up, I will build my way, my journey. It’s a great honour for me,” he added.

Third seed Alcaraz produced some classy winners in the three-set final on Sunday (14/7), but his consistency proved key to victory.

After breaking Djokovic twice in the first set, the Spaniard repeated the feat in the second before putting his service errors behind him to take the third.

Alcaraz produced a series of beautiful touches at the net throughout the match and served with precision in a near-flawless performance. (Ant/Z-1)
