Boszhard, best known as a presenter at RTL, has previously appeared in musicals as Les Misérables in Beauty and the beast. After that, he focused mainly on TV programs. “In the meantime, I auditioned twice more for other roles. I would have liked to do both, but I didn’t get either. So it’s definitely not the case that when I call, I immediately get the role. I had to work hard for this audition as well.”
Dry mouth
The audition for the Dutch version of Moulin Rouge! took place in the Netherlands. Boszhard got the chance to audition in New York, in the presence of the original director, Alex Timbers. “I don’t like traveling at all. And I definitely don’t like the pressure that comes with it. I preferred to audition here. But everyone told me to go. So I started working hard with Matt DiCarlo, the director. He helped me through it.”

He looks back on that exciting moment: “I was standing on stage, ready for my audition. It was now or never. I had thought of everything, except water. And my mouth was really dry. I was quickly allowed to go to the toilet, where I held my mouth under the tap. I had forgotten for a moment that the water in New York is a big chlorine bath.” He walked back upstairs to the hall, but stopped in front of a mirror. “I looked at myself and said: ‘From now on I am Harold Zidler’. And then I was Harold. And I did it.”
Rehearsals
What follows are weeks of rehearsals. “My partner sometimes looks at me at home and wonders out loud who he’s sitting at the table with, that’s how I’m in my role. But he doesn’t mind. I have permission to completely immerse myself in this role.” He crams his lines into his head at every conceivable moment of the day. “While washing up, driving, walking: I cram my lines in like a soldier. If I say just one word wrong, I think shit, again, again, again.”
He also works a lot on his fitness. “I was sweating a lot in the beginning. When Matt asked me to redo a scene a few times, I would get hot as hell from the effort. The role still had to get into my body. But my heart rate is pumping again. This role is the best thing my body can have.”
Make up your mind
According to Boszhard, the musical has many similarities with Make Up Your Mindthe program he presents and in which famous Dutch people go in drag. “The musical also stands for diversity, for show and for drag queens. In Moulin Rouge! There is also a drag queen; baby doll. She is only safe in the theater. Outside she is murdered.”
In the Netherlands, he says, we also have to deal with physical violence against queens and the community. “But at the same time, we think it’s fine if it’s on TV. There’s a certain line in that, which also goes to my heart. That’s why I hope that the entire drag jury of Make up your mind to the premiere of Moulin Rouge! Musical comes. This show is also a bit of them.”
