Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti says Eduardo Camavinga will now play “as a torchbearer or as a sentry, not as a full-back” next season, following the Frenchman took over on the left of defence.

Eduardo Camavinga converted to left side, it may already be over. This Friday, just before leaving for Real Madrid’s pre-season American tour, his coach Carlo Ancelotti announced in conference that he intends to use the French international exclusively in midfield next season.

“If Mendy and Fran Garcia are there, he will not play on the side”

“He played in the sideline in a hurry because of Mendy’s injury, recalls the merengue coach. Mendy is very good, like Fran Garcia, who can bring us a lot. Camavinga is a midfielder with great quality and projection, the idea is to use him as a torchbearer or as a sentry, not as a full-back. If Mendy and Fran Garcia are there, he won’t play as a full-back”.

Last season, the former Rennais had as a reminder alternated between a position of defensive midfielder or torchbearer and the left lane of the defense, in particular occupied during the quarters and semi-finals of the Champions League. A new position discovered with the Blues during the World Cup and the group match once morest Tunisia (0-1).

Towards an abandonment of 4-3-3?

“It may be that this year we are going to play a different system, given what we have done, the systems that we have used in recent years and which have given us a lot of success and which we must not forget, adds Ancelotti regarding his usual 4-3-3. You have to try to find a new style (…) The players have to feel comfortable in the system in which they play”.

The Italian coach will have four games to roam and try to find the right pattern before the resumption of the championship. Real Madrid will face AC Milan (24/07), Manchester United (27/07), FC Barcelona (29/07) and Juventus (03/08) in a friendly match in the United States.
