Carles Puigdemont’s Influence on Spain’s Political Future: The Role of the Exiled Leader in the Presidency Vote

Carles Puigdemont fled Spain almost six years ago to escape prison. The leader in exile is still subject to an arrest warrant. He seems to hold the political future of the President of the outgoing Spanish government, the socialist Pedro Sánchez, in his hands. And by extension, that of the Spanish government and the country.

Thursday, the deputies will renew the presidency of the assembly, as well as the eight members of its office. The vote is generating enormous interest, as everyone sees it as a prelude to the vote for the investiture of the next Prime Minister, which should take place at the end of August or the beginning of September. Eyes will therefore be on the seven deputies of the Together for Catalonia (JxCat – Junts) party. by Carles Puigdemont.

This strange situation stems from the results of the July 23 election, which saw a Pyrrhic victory for the People’s Party (PP), now the country’s leading party with 137 deputies, but very far from the absolute majority of seats (176) necessary for that its leader Alberto Núñez Feijóo can be sworn in as head of government.

Even the decision of the far-right Vox party to bring the votes of its 33 deputies to the PP, without demanding to enter the government, would not be enough for Alberto Núñez Feijóo, who, with the support of the deputy of a small regional formation, can barely count on 171 votes.

At the same time, Pedro Sánchez, with his 121 deputies and the 31 deputies of Sumar, his radical left partner, expects to obtain the support of four regional parties, including three Basque and Catalan separatist formations, allowing him to also reach 171 deputies. .
