LYON, France (AP) — Former French first lady Carla Bruni-Sarkozy was indicted on preliminary charges yesterday for her role in alleged efforts to pressure a witness who accused former President Nicolas Sarkozy of receiving illegal campaign funding from Libya.
Carla Bruni-Sarkozy was placed under judicial supervision yesterday, which includes banning her from contact with anyone involved in the case except her husband, according to a judicial official who was not authorized to be named publicly when discussing an ongoing investigation.
Preliminary charges against Ms. Bruni include witness tampering and criminal association with attempted fraud to mislead magistrates investigating her husband on suspicion of receiving illegal funds during the 2007 presidential campaign, the official said.
