The 2024 Paris OLYMPICS officially opened on Saturday (27/7) early morning WIB marked by a fireball flying into the sky above the Seine River. Carl Lewis, Serena Williams, Rafael Nadal, and Nadia Comaneci in one boat carried the Olympic flame down the Seine River

Nine-time Olympic champion Carl Lewis has faced some tough opponents over the years. But at the opening ceremony of the 2024 Paris Olympics on Saturday (27/7) early morning WIB, the legendary sprinter barely managed to overcome his toughest opponent yet: a rocking boat.

However, the journey appeared to last slightly longer than Nadal’s epic five-set match against Roger Federer in the 2008 Wimbledon final, with the Spaniard appearing concerned that the fire would be extinguished by strong winds.

While Williams and Lewis looked terrified, holding the torch in one hand while trying to balance it with the other, only Comaneci looked calm as the boat rocked back and forth.

At one point, Williams appeared to be gasping for breath with fear and holding on to Comaneci.

“Carl Lewis absolutely hated this boat ride this is my 2024 Olympics highlight,” said one user on X

Nadal said he was happy to take part in the opening ceremony of the 2024 Olympics and compete in Paris.

“I’m very happy to have the opportunity to come back here,” Nadal said.

“It’s another opportunity. This year I couldn’t spend a lot of time at Roland Garros, so I’m enjoying the fact that I’m back for the Olympics. The Olympics are completely different to other events. I’m just trying to enjoy every moment.”

The Games’ biggest ceremony was held outside a stadium for the first time, with athletes and officials taking part in a boat parade along the Seine River past iconic Parisian buildings.

Boats carrying the athletes’ parade will travel along the Seine starting from the Austerlitz Bridge for 6km. (Theguardian/P-5)
