Oberrauner: Honoring the legacy of the resistance fighters, defending the achievements of our democracy and drawing lessons from history
Klagenfurt (OTS) – 90 years ago, in the February battles of 1934, courageous social democrats across Austria resolutely resisted the emerging Austrofascism. Their commitment to democracy, freedom and justice cost many of them their lives. Today we remember their bravery and sacrifice.
“Workers all over Austria stood up together, went on strike and defended themselves once morest oppression. It is time to also honor the often overlooked heroines of the resistance,” emphasizes the Carinthian SPÖ state women’s chairwoman Petra Oberrauner. “The women who helped dig trenches, secure mining tunnels, set up barricades and provided the fighters with food and warm clothing made a significant contribution to the resistance.”
For Oberrauner, it is important to emphasize the central role of women, who have been ignored in research for far too long and have remained invisible in historical consciousness.
While strategic debates and political decisions made by officials and parties are well documented, who provided food and support during breaks in conflict has often been neglected. This overlooked work, often done by women, deserves to be included in the collective memory, said Oberrauner: “It is time to tell their story and recognize their achievements.”
In view of the Russian war of aggression in Ukraine and the growing strength of right-wing extremist groups and parties across Europe, Oberrauner warns: “Never once more war! Never once more fascism! It is our responsibility to honor the legacy of the resistance fighters, defend the achievements of our democracy and learn the lessons of history!”
