The board of directors of Caribes de Anzoátegui announced this Thursday a change with Cardenales de Lara. Catcher Tomás Telis is leaving for the twilight city, while infielder Leonel Valera is moving to “la hut.”
According to a statement from La Tribu’s top brass, the transaction was made official today at the offices of the Venezuelan Professional Baseball League (LVBP).
Otto Padrón, the team’s sports manager, said that with the acquisition of Valera they continue to adjust the roster, thinking regarding the present and future of the club. He described the infielder as a defender on the left side of the infield, with an above-average arm and glove.
The player from Barinas state has eight seasons in the minor leagues. In his career he has accumulated 651 games, 561 hits, 45 home runs and 285 RBIs, with 134 stolen bases in 166 attempts and a batting average of .245.
The 2023/2024 season was Valera’s second season in Venezuelan baseball, both with the Red Birds. In the previous season, the 25-year-old player had an average of .333 in 23 games. He took 75 at-bats and added 25 hits, nine RBIs and 11 runs scored.
It is worth noting that Valera belongs to the Kansas City Royals organization. He will have the mission of providing depth and youth to the aboriginal team, which is undergoing a restructuring process.
Telis, meanwhile, is leaving for Cardenales following a successful stay in Puerto La Cruz. He was fundamental in Caribes’ glorious decade and in seven seasons he played in four finals and won two titles.
It should also be remembered that the Anzoategui organization acquired via trade the also keeper Carlos Pérez from Navegantes del Magallanes, in exchange for the pitcher Jesús Paricaguan and the utility player Edgardo Fermín.
