Cargo ship runs aground near Baltimore port, a year after its ‘big brother’ blocked the Suez Canal

The incident is curiously reminiscent of another. The Ever Forward, a 334m freighter, ran aground Sunday night in the Chesapeake Bay. A navigation error seems to be the cause of this incident, which took place as the ship left the port of Baltimore in the United States.

Around 9 p.m. on Sunday evening, the Ever Forward got stuck for no apparent reason. According to a local average, the ship was out of the channel, in a place where it does not have enough depth to navigate. Hence its stranding, reports West France.

“There are no injuries, pollution or damage to the ship”

Since then, the container ship is still at a standstill near Baltimore, according to the United States Coast Guard and marinetraffic.com website. It is operated by Evergreen Marine Corp Taiwan Ltd… The same Taiwanese shipping company that runs the Ever Given. This freighter ran aground last March, blocking maritime traffic in the Suez Canal, one of the busiest waterways in the world. The incident, which had dragged on for several months, has already cost the company several hundred million euros.

For the moment, the blocking of his “little brother” has no consequences. It is beached but “does not prevent other ships from accessing the port”, reports the television channel CBC Baltimore. “There are no injuries, pollution or damage to the ship, according to the us coast guard. We are trying to determine the causes of the incident. »

Now the priority is to tow the ship to a safe place, says Captain David O’Connell. “At the moment we are working with the rescuers. We’ve asked them to submit a rescue plan to us, so that’s something we’ll be looking at with them. »
