caregivers on strike for better working conditions

At the call of four of the five main hospital unions, part of the nursing staff was on strike this Tuesday all over France.

The ills of hospitals are numerous, and the staff, angry, deplore a crying lack of means. This is why four of the five main trade unions in the hospital sector – CGT, FO, SUD and Unsa – called for a strike on Tuesday. A national day of action followed in multiple establishments, such as at the Auxerre hospital center, where 11.31% of the agents were on strike at midday, according to L’Yonne republicaine.

The syndicate FO denounces a “catastrophic situation” for public hospitals, “even more critical than that known in the summer of 2022”. He therefore calls for “emergency measures on wages, staffing, working conditions”. The CGT calls for “a massive hiring and training plan” to make up for the lack of personnel.

Insufficient revaluation

The measures announced on June 12 by the government, to increase wages, are struggling to convince unions and caregivers. In a context of inflation, the value of the point of the civil service, which serves as the basis for calculating the salary of personnel in hospitals, must increase by 1.5% on July 1. Added to this are various measures, including a bonus of 300 to 800 euros for all agents earning less than 3,250 euros.

“There are enough bonuses that divide agents between different categories of staff, which are never reassessed, which do not count for retirement”, replies the CGT.

Hospital doctors on strike on July 4

Beyond remuneration, the grievances of the hospital world concern, among other things, the lack of doctors and nurses, the closing of beds and emergency services, or even suffering psychiatric services.

Three unions of hospital practitioners (CMH, INPH, Snam-HP) have also called for “a day of strike and action” on July 4. According to them, “the public hospital is collapsing in whole sections”. Resignations are more and more frequent and young doctors no longer want to engage “in a profession that has become so unattractive”.
