There is little care for those who use a cell phone, especially if it is an iPhone. Currently, criminals have managed to obtain people’s devices and, in addition to stealing their bank details, they make purchases from other devices using their financial accounts and sell them all, including the stolen device.

A report published by “The Wall Street Journal” addressed this problem and interviewed one of the thieves, who was arrested and revealed what he did to steal the victims’ products. The various reports made by the vehicle were sent to Apple, which even implemented a new security function on the devices.

According to the criminal, sentenced to 94 months in prison, he approached users with the aim of offering drugs. However, he had nothing and used the matter as a pretext to obtain numerical passwords to access the cell phone unlock. During a few seconds of access to the device, he was able to reset the password and even remove the person’s face to register his own.

Exploiting this “loophole” gave the man the chance to obtain money and banking details from finance apps such as Venmo and Paypal. Not only that, but he was also able to use Apple Pay to make purchases in users’ names. Finally, he even managed to sell the smartphones along with iPads and other purchased devices.

The criminal also says that, if he didn’t find what he wanted, he would go to the recorded notes and look for a topic used by the owners of the devices to store passwords. To sell the devices, he formatted the devices and sold them as new, getting around $900 for an iPhone 14 Pro Max, for example.

According to the iPhone thief, his main target was university students, who usually meet in bars and, when the boy was approached, they were drunk and had little ability to understand the situation.

How to prevent it?

Faced with this problem, Apple added a new option to protect devices, specifically for protecting stolen devices. With it, you will need to provide your face for Face ID or a fingerprint to change your account password. Then you have to wait an hour and provide the same information again. The same process applies to adding a new face.

However, this new feature still has the problem of being available only in version 17.3 of iOS. Furthermore, it does not prevent access to other apps, such as Venmo, or even Apple Pay. The feature is disabled by default, so you need to activate it.

It remains to be seen what other measures Apple can take to add more layers of security. Users, in turn, should be more careful not to fall for scams like this.
