St. Pölten (OTS) – People in Austria are getting older and older. This positive development brings with it some challenges. As a result of increasing life expectancy, there is, among other things, an increased need for additional nursing staff. The “Österreich-Bild” from the ORF regional studio Lower Austria (design: Manuela Matl, camera: Danijel Brazda) is dedicated to the different training paths, their advantages and disadvantages from an expert perspective and sheds light on the motivation of prospective nursing staff to take up this demanding profession.
In response to the increasing need for care, the options for training in nursing have been significantly expanded and made more attractive in recent years. Nursing apprenticeships were introduced in the fall, a three- to four-year training course that can be completed from the age of 15 and not just from the age of 17, as in health and nursing schools.
A school trial of higher school education, which was introduced three years ago and includes both a high school diploma and nursing training, is now being transferred to the mainstream school system earlier than planned. It is offered by Caritas in Gaming, among others. Many years ago, the technical colleges, such as the one in St. Pölten, were entrusted with the further training for qualified nursing staff, which is completed with the academic degree of a bachelor’s degree.
A bonus for everyone in nursing training of between 420 and 600 euros, which is paid out by the state of Lower Austria, is intended to increase interest in this training. Career changers in particular should be motivated to complete training at a health and nursing school, such as the Mauer Education Center.
