If PVC floors are multiplying in our interiors, a study warns of the risks associated with the harmful compounds they contain.
Easy to maintain and easy to install, le sol en PVC takes up more and more space in our interiors. It is found both in the interiors of individuals and in professional premises, in particular because it is inexpensive. However, PVC has a bad image.
First of all, its production is harmful to the environment. But an American survey published in Fast Company has just demonstrated that he is also harmful to our health. Moreover, this harmfulness applies to manufacture as well as to use or exposure.
Many chemicals contained in PVC floors
First of all, PVC floors (parquet slats, rolls, etc.) require the use of mercury in their design. If they do not contain it, this heavy metal is released into the atmosphere following the manufacturing process. In fact, it generates a form of pollution that impacts the environment and increases the risk of respiratory problems.
Then, the composition of these soils includes several chemicals known to cause cancer. This is the case for phthalates, chlorine gas, lead and asbestos. However, not all of these particles are locked into the soil texture. Over the years and steps, they are gradually released into the air. In fact, exposure to carcinogens increases over time.
Worse still, the survey reveals that these harmful particles can enter our body via direct contact with the skin. Nevertheless, there is no need to panic if there is PVC flooring in your home. Indeed, the exposure is much lower than in the Chinese factories that manufacture these floor coverings. or for people living nearby.
However, No risk does not exist and consumers need to be aware of this.
A material that can cause permanent respiratory problems if burned
In addition, the survey warns of increased risk in the event of fire. In fact, if a fire breaks out in a hearth with a PVC floor, the toxic fumes emanating from it can cause serious respiratory illnesses. But burning PVC is also harmful to the environment.
This is indeed the method used to remove these floor coverings. Toxic fumes loaded with carcinogens are therefore evacuated into the air, generating additional pollution. In addition, the survey recalls that this material is not currently recycled.
The survey therefore wishes to raise awareness, in particular for the construction of structures welcoming fragile people.
