The number of new cars sold will also lag behind next year, expect industry organizations BOVAG and RAI Association. They estimate that 360,000 new passenger cars will be registered in 2024, regarding the same as this year.
For 2023, it is expected that 357,000 new cars will be registered by the end of the year. That’s more than in 2022, when the sector had problems supplying repaired cars and recorded the lowest number of new cars in 55 years. This year, some of those delayed cars were still delivered and registered.
Those delivery problems are behind us, but BOVAG and RAI Association do not expect an increase in the number of new cars sold.
Since 2020, fewer than 400,000 cars have been sold annually in the Netherlands. In decades before that, that rarely happened.
The trade associations express their concerns that new sales remain low. According to them, new sales should contribute to the greening of the vehicle fleet. They argue that the government should also encourage the purchase of electric cars in the coming years.
