Car rental: $8,000 bill after being accused of driving 36,000 km

A woman who rented a car during her three-day stay in Toronto was surprised to be charged $8,000 when the company claimed she had traveled 36,000 kilometres, a distance that almost reaches the circumference of the Earth.

Vancouver native Giovanna Boniface rented a vehicle from Avis when she arrived at Toronto’s Pearson Airport to help her daughter settle into college, CTV News reported.

In total, she claimed to have traveled nearly 300 kilometers between downtown Toronto and Kitchener before flying back to Europe.

Ms. Boniface paid approximately $1,000 upfront for the car rental. It was while wanting to verify that the debit had indeed been made on her credit card that she noticed a problem.

“That’s when I noticed that Avis had charged over $8,000,” she told the outlet.

Looking at her receipt, she then saw that the rental company had charged her for a 36,482 kilometer run at a rate of 25 cents per kilometer.

“The first thing I wanted to do was actually go back through security and head to the counter,” she claimed. “But I wouldn’t have had time to do it because the security lines were really long.”

The difficulties do not end there since it was almost impossible for Mrs. Boniface to join the rental company. After no answer at the counter in Toronto, the call to the general number did not further the situation.

“They didn’t seem to understand my problem and I really needed them to remove that $8,000 charge,” she pointed out.

After attempting to have the transaction canceled with Visa, which was not possible since the transaction was still pending, Avis informed her a few days later that the additional charges would be refunded, once the story was resolved. out in the media.

“The most frustrating thing was not being able to reach customer service in a reasonable time,” she said.
