O Apple Paylaunched ten years ago, revolutionized the way people pay for services and products, becoming an essential part of the modern user’s everyday experience. Despite initial challenges convincing consumers and merchants to adopt this technology, Apple was able to establish a solid foundation for Apple Pay, which is now widely accepted in the United States and used by hundreds of millions of consumers in 78 countries.

The next frontier for Apple is digital identitywith the state of California (USA) being the seventh state to offer support for this type of document in the app Portfolio (Wallet). The Transportation Security Administration (Transportation Security AdministrationTSA), a US government agency, already accepts mobile IDs at many US airports, and Apple is working to expand this functionality to other states.

With the majority of merchants accepting contactless payments and more than 11,000 banks and credit card partners supporting Apple Pay, Apple has achieved significant scale in digital payments and continues to innovate by turning its attention to other aspects of the wallet experience mobile, such as support for digital transit cards — launched in 2016 and now available in nearly 300 cities.

Jennifer Baileyvice-president of Apple Pay and Apple Wallet, explained in an interview with The Points Guy that the digitization of identity documents is a long-term journey, but essential for a future in which physical wallets are left aside.

In addition to credit cards and ID cards, Apple is collaborating with more than 30 automakers to bring Car Keys (Car Keys) to the Wallet app. This development could make renting cars easier, making the travel experience even more convenient. With a continued focus on expanding acceptance and adding new features, Apple is determined to shape the future of digital wallets by creating an increasingly integrated and efficient experience for users.

Being able to book a car rental, confirm your authentication and identity… you can imagine that a car rental company will issue you a digital key, and that key can be used to unlock and use a car.

Many hotel chains now allow guests to access their rooms using a digital key stored in the Wallet app. It’s not hard to imagine that this functionality will also reach cars soon.

In 2022, Apple introduced support for digital IDs and driver’s licenses in the Wallet app. Although initial adoption has been slow, Bailey is confident that this technology will gain popularity, highlighting that the option for a digital identity is “really profound”, Bailey adds:

It will be a long-term journey like the one we had with Apple Pay. It’s helping states understand how our approach is privacy-protected and highly secure, how we don’t own the data, and how we maintain no association with where you’re presenting your ID.

In her interview, Bailey clarifies that these ideas are concepts yet to be explored in the long term to replace the wallet, but that the technology — which is the central point of Apple Pay — can be considered “perfect”, according to the executive.
