The incident occurred shortly before 11:30 a.m. on the Hoogbrugstraat level crossing in Bilzen. A 40-year-old nurse ended up on the tracks with her car at the level crossing between Hoogbrugstraat and Rooi in Bilzen.
Despite the red light, the nurse decided to slalom between the barriers due to lack of time. The train hit the car but, luckily, the woman managed to get out of her vehicle under her own power. She suffered only minor injuries but was taken to hospital for check-ups.
“She managed to get out of the car. She was very shaken, but seemed to be fine,” residents explained to our colleagues at Nieuwsblad. “The woman was taken to hospital for further medical examinations,” said Frank Partoens from the East Limburg Fire Department.

Due to the towing work, train traffic on the tracks between Hasselt and Tongeren is no longer authorized for an indefinite period.
Replacement buses are planned by SNCB as soon as possible. “It will take some time before rail traffic can resume,” Mr Partoens said.
