Those involved got away with the horror: both the 81-year-old driver and the 17 train passengers and the driver remained unharmed, the state police informed.
The accident happened around 7:50 a.m. on Tuesday. The 81-year-old drove her car from Ottensheim towards Walding. At the junction with Ziegelbauernstrasse, she wanted to turn right towards the shopping park. At that moment, the traffic light at the level crossing with a barrier switched to “orange”. The driver told the police that she had stopped the vehicle, but that it continued to roll over the stop line.
As a result, the railroad barrier closed on the car roof and a railcar from the Mühlkreisbahn came towards them. Although the 22-year-old engine driver from Linz immediately applied the brakes, he was unable to bring the railcar to a standstill in time. There was a collision with the 81-year-old’s car. The accident had an impact on numerous commuters: train services on the Mühlkreisbahn were suspended until nine in the morning.
