This Thursday, September 26, the communities of Barbosa, Bello, Copacabana and Girardota will come together to celebrate Car-Free Dayan initiative that seeks to reduce air pollution and encourage the use of public transport. This measure, agreed by municipal administrations within the framework of Sustainable Mobility Week, aims to raise public awareness of the need to reduce the use of private cars.

Air pollution is a growing problem in many cities around the world, and the Aburrá Valley is no exception. According to the Metropolitan Area in 2019, trucks and tractor-trailers contribute 39% of the polluting particles in the region, while dump trucks contribute 26%. Four-stroke motorcycles (13%), buses (10%) and Private cars (8%) are also responsible for the emission of pollutants. Taxis (2%) and two-stroke motorcycles (1%) also have a negative impact. This affects not only air quality, but also the health of the population, causing respiratory and cardiovascular diseases.

The Mobility Secretaries of each municipality highlighted the importance of this measure: “This is a measure that will impact the entire metropolitan region. We hope that citizens consider the use of public transport as a viable alternative.“said Julián Raúl Cano Carballo from Copacabana. The decision to implement this vehicle restriction day is a direct response to the growing concern about air quality in the region.

Get ready for Car-Free Day in the Northern Aburrá Valley:

The restriction will apply from 5:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. and will affect both private vehicles and motorcycles. Those who fail to comply with this regulation They will face penalties that include a fine equivalent to 15 current daily minimum legal wages and immobilization of the vehicle. However, there are exemptions for emergency vehicles, legalized school transportation, and those intended for people with disabilities or undergoing vital medical treatment.

It is estimated that Around 100,000 vehicles will stop circulating in these four municipalities during the daywhich represents a significant reduction in traffic and, therefore, an improvement in air quality. This action not only seeks to reduce pollution temporarily, but also to encourage a cultural change towards the use of more sustainable modes of transport, such as public transport, cycling or walking.

In addition to reducing emissions, Vehicle-Free Day invites citizens to reflect on their mobility habits and consider more environmentally friendly alternatives in their daily lives. The mayors have called on the population to join this initiative, highlighting that every small change can have a great impact on the health of the planet and all its inhabitants.
