Which means of transport do we use and why? And what has changed regarding these habits? These are central questions that are the focus of the state’s traffic survey. Last carried out in 2012, it was shown in 2022 that the share of private motorized transport (MIV) has decreased; Cycling and walking are becoming more popular.
The use of public transport has decreased slightly (see graphic).
In comparison, the share of motorized vehicles in commuter traffic has decreased, and the share of non-motorized means of transport in shopping traffic has also increased significantly. People walk or cycle more often when traveling to school, and more trips on foot were counted when traveling for leisure purposes than in 2012.
State Transport Councilor Günther Steinkellner (FP) emphasizes that there are important decisions to be made in mobility, especially in the central area; these decisions would determine the path to a sustainable, efficient and economically viable future. Steinkellner highlights the regional light rail as an important project, and the four-track ÖBB western line expansion as a foundation for higher S-Bahn frequencies is also an important component.
