A man identified as Manuel David Zapata Rivera, 23, has been sent to prison after being accused of murdering and disappearing a friend in Alexandria, Eastern Antioquia, supposedly for stealing his car.
According to the Prosecutor’s Office, Zapata Rivera is charged with multiple charges, including homicide, forced disappearance, qualified theft and illegal possession of firearms. In addition, he is accused of abusive access to a computer system.
The victim disappeared in the early morning of August 26, 2023, after leaving his home in Alexandria. It is presumed that he left to pick up three people in the Tocaima village with the intention of taking them to the José María Córdova airport in Rionegro. However, upon arrival, he was approached by Zapata Rivera, who allegedly shot him.
After the crime, the accused transported the victim’s body in the vehicle to a remote area, where he buried it, using lime to prevent the remains from being discovered by animals. On September 16, 2023, the CTI found the human remains.
To eliminate evidence, Zapata Rivera cleaned the car and then moved to Medellín, where he sold the vehicle for 8 million pesos. In addition, he used the victim’s cell phone to request money from his family.
Weeks later, the vehicle was immobilized in Medellín, and the use of forensic lights revealed traces of blood on the driver’s seat and trunk. Finally, the Gaula of the National Police managed to capture him in Bogotá, although the suspect did not accept the charges against him.
