This photo, recently released by NASA, was taken on December 30, 2020. , was taken by the Juno probe during its 31st flyby. It’s not too different from the Earth’s lightning often captured from the International Space Station (ISS). There is one difference though. On Earth, lightning occurs in clouds composed of water and occurs most often near the equator, whereas on Jupiter, lightning occurs in clouds of ammonia and water, most often at the poles. The photo is also the north pole of Jupiter. The Juno probe, which entered Jupiter orbit in July 2016, is repeatedly attempting a flyby (perijove). Juno has collected various data from a total of 51 close-by flights to date. Through this, the secrets of Jupiter’s structure, formation, and evolution are being uncovered.
