In a moving episode of ‘Best Singers’, singer Sera de Bruin (30) was central. She candidly shared her personal story, including the grief surrounding the loss of her father. Her vulnerability touched not only her fellow artists, but also the viewers at home, who were deeply emotional by her honesty and by the songs sung especially for her.

“Thank you, Sera from Sliedrecht, for your openness, self-mockery, your laugh and your tears”

Sera talks candidly about her past in the broadcast. For example, the singer shares that she used to be often bullied about her teeth. “That hurt me so much. It really bothered me for weeks,” she reflects.

Sera also talks emotionally about the death of her Turkish father. She would have liked to learn to speak Turkish. “But to no avail. Before I could ever ask him to teach me, he had already died.” She was twelve years old when her father died ‘unexpectedly’ at the age of 44. “He went into cardiac arrest. (…) I remember that day as well as yesterday. It hit our roof raw. The police came to tell us. The day before we all had a barbecue together.” The singer looks back on a ‘traumatic experience’: “Suddenly he didn’t come home anymore.” She calls it a nightmare. “I couldn’t express how much I loved him anymore.”

Sera’s story moves the people at home. On YouTube someone writes: ‘Thank you, Sera from Sliedrecht, for your openness, self-mockery, your laugh and your tears.’

For some viewers, this episode also felt a bit like ‘therapy’: ‘Now 10.5 months after the death of my love, I still cry a lot and unexpectedly. This program makes me sing along and cry along. Delicious. I need it.’

After the emotional story about the death of her father, Tangarine’s brothers decide to surprise Sera with the song ‘Dance with my father‘. The singer breaks the moment the song is announced. The viewers at home are not kept dry either. ‘I’m going to cry when I see her break. I feel her.’ Another wrote: ‘I’m crying. Goosebumps.’

Viewers at home are also impressed by how beautifully Tangarine has sung the song. “Beautiful version of a beautiful song,” writes an emotional fan on YouTube. “Goosebumps from toe to crown,” wrote another. And: ‘How beautifully they did this, speechless.’
