Capriles urges electoral body to tell “the truth” when announcing results

Caracas, Jul 28 (EFE).- Anti-Chavez activist Henrique Capriles urged Venezuela’s National Electoral Council (CNE) to “tell the truth” when it announces the results of the presidential elections held this Sunday, while saying that “nothing can be above the truth and popular sovereignty.”

“Seeing the results and results that are coming in from all over the country, we Venezuelans hope that the CNE’s announcement corresponds to what the people decided. The CNE must tell the truth,” urged Capriles in X, who supports the candidacy of Edmundo González Urrutia, standard-bearer of the largest opposition coalition, the Democratic Unitary Platform (PUD).

Capriles also said that “everyone” has “information from previous processes and in some centers what happened today is historic.”

Earlier, González Urrutia said he was “more than pleased” with the expectations regarding the results of the elections, in which he is competing against nine candidates, including the current president, Nicolás Maduro.

Meanwhile, the head of Maduro’s campaign command, Jorge Rodríguez, said that, although “they cannot give results,” they can “show faces,” while smiling.

“We cannot give results. We will patiently wait for the bulletin from the National Electoral Council, but immediately after that bulletin is issued, we will wait for them,” Rodriguez told reporters.

Opposition leader María Corina Machado, who supports González Urrutia, asked electoral witnesses to secure the voting record of the elections, while former Venezuelan governor Andrés Velásquez denounced that some PUD witnesses have been expelled from voting centers at the time of the final count, at the end of the presidential elections, without any reason for it and without being given any arguments.
