Capriles considers negotiations to be “urgent” to resolve the political crisis in Venezuela

Caracas, Aug 26 (EFE).- Henrique Capriles on Monday described negotiations as “urgent” to resolve the political crisis in Venezuela following the July 28 presidential election, in which President Nicolás Maduro was declared the winner, a result considered fraudulent by the anti-Chavez majority, which insists on the victory of its standard-bearer, Edmundo González Urrutia.

“Let’s not waste time, we have to do it now,” said the former governor, who insisted on the urgency of “unblocking the conflict” through negotiations between the government and the majority opposition, so that “popular sovereignty” expressed in the elections prevails.

In his opinion, there is no possibility of “improving the living conditions of all Venezuelans” and of recovering “the country’s reserves, the oil business, education and health” if “this political conflict” continues.

“What do we have to do? Insist that the truth prevails, (…) and we have to try to reactivate the negotiations in Venezuela, because millions of Venezuelans and the future of the country are at risk here, and this situation, like the one we have now, is unsustainable,” warned Capriles in an interview with ‘Vladimir a la Carta’, broadcast on YouTube.

On August 19, González Urrutia urged Maduro to “take the step now” to begin “a peaceful transition,” for which the anti-Chavez leader said he was willing to engage in political dialogue.

The leader of the Democratic Unitary Platform (PUD) – the main opposition bloc – warned that “every day” that the authorities “hinder the democratic transition, Venezuelans suffer a country in crisis and without freedom,” so he reiterated that “clinging to power only exacerbates the suffering” of citizens.

Opposition leader María Corina Machado, González Urrutia’s main supporter, recently said that Maduro should “understand that his best option” is to “start a negotiation” with the anti-Chavez majority.

However, for the head of state, the “only negotiation” with Machado, whom he accuses of being a “terrorist”, is that she “surrender to justice”, as Maduro said on August 9.
