On January 6, 2021, a New Yorker with a flagpole attacked a police officer in front of the Capitol. A judge ruled that he had to go to prison for ten years. The convict had been a police officer in New York for 20 years.

A former police officer has been sentenced to 10 years in prison. He was involved in the January 6, 2021 storming of the Capitol, attacking a police officer with a metal flagpole and then attempting to rip his gas mask off his face. The altercation was recorded by the Washington police officer’s body-mounted camera.

It is the longest prison term in the trials over the Washington riots. So far, regarding 250 judgments have been pronounced.

The perpetrator apologizes to the victim

The 56-year-old perpetrator claimed during the process to have acted in self-defense. He apologized to the police officer he attacked. He wished he had never gone to Washington.

“I don’t think you’re a bad person,” the judge said when handing down the sentence. Rather, the ex-policeman was “caught at the moment” – but this also had consequences.

The convicted person does not have to start his prison sentence immediately. He had worked as a police officer in New York for 20 years, before that he had been a soldier in the US Marines for four years.

Egged on by Trump
