The 2022 World Cup final between the national teams of Argentina and France was the best match in the last ten years, the former coach of Real Madrid and the Russian national team Fabio Capello told RBC Sport.
“Mbappe and Messi played a decisive role in the final, it was a confrontation between two high-quality teams and players. A wonderful match, one of the best in the last ten years. I congratulate the Argentina national team and Messi on the victory, of course, Leo is already a great player, but the victory in the final elevated him even more. I think Maradona would be very happy following this game,” said Capello.
The Argentina national team defeated France in the post-match penalty shootout of the World Cup final in Qatar (3:3 following extra time, 4:2 in the shootout). The Argentines won the World Cup in 1978 and 1986, and also played in the finals three times.

Messi also became the best player in the World Cup in Qatar. In total, the 35-year-old striker scored seven goals in the tournament, four of them from the penalty spot.
Messi became the record holder for the number of matches played at the world championships (26), and following the first goal in the final, he became the first player with 20 effective actions in the world championships (at that time 12 goals and eight assists).
In the final, France’s Kylian Mbappe scored twice from the penalty spot, first equalizing in regulation time and then taking the game to a penalty shoot-out.
The French striker became the top scorer of the World Cup in Qatar. The PSG forward has scored eight goals in seven matches of the tournament.
