The Government of Cape Verde yesterday reiterated its commitment to the one-China principle, according to a note from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MNE) published on the Internet, following a meeting with the Chinese ambassador to the Portuguese-speaking archipelago
The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Cooperation and Regional Integration, Rui Figueiredo Soares, received on Tuesday the Chinese ambassador to Cape Verde, Xu Jie, who took Saturday’s elections in Taiwan to the meeting.
In addition to the reciprocal words of friendship, cooperation and solidarity, the Cape Verdean leader “reaffirmed the firm commitment of the State of Cape Verde to the one-China principle”.
Rui Figueiredo Soares “recognized China’s efforts to safeguard its sovereignty and territorial integrity, privileging peaceful paths in order to maintain a stable situation and maintain peace and stability in the region and between the two sides of the strait”.
William Lai, until now vice president of Taiwan and considered an “agitator” by Beijing, won Saturday’s elections with 40.05% of the vote.
The President-elect of Taiwan stated that these elections demonstrated to the international community that, between “democracy and authoritarianism”, the Taiwanese chose to be “on the side of democracy”.
Taiwan, where the Chinese nationalist army retreated following being defeated by communist troops in the civil war, has been governed autonomously since 1949.
However, China claims sovereignty over the island, which it considers a rebellious province, and tension associated with the idea that it may resort to force if the island declares independence has remained over the decades.
