Right off the bat, I think we can agree that the Canucks are surprising this season.
The team seemed so lost on the ice last year…
But the arrival of Rick Tocchet as head coach completely changed the situation.
The Canucks are on track to amass over 110 points in the standings if they continue to keep pace, but in Vancouver, there is still concern.
For what?
Because Elias Pettersson’s contract ($7.35 million per year) ends at the end of the season and because he has not necessarily demonstrated the desire to stay.
The Canucks were worried, so much so that they tried to trade him to Carolina, according to what Elliotte Friedman reported in a recent article.
And the Swede came close to ending up with the Hurricanes:
According to multiple sources, the Vancouver Canucks and Carolina Hurricanes had discussions regarding Elias Pettersson that reached a stage where the Canucks and the player had to make serious decisions regarding the direction their relationship would take. – Elliotte Friedman

It’s really interesting.
Pettersson finally committed to Vancouver, where he is expected to sign a GROS contract shortly… But if it ever falls through, I have the impression that the Hurricanes will be fast on the peak.
I’m especially wondering what the Hurricanes’ offer looked like, because Pettersson has been the Canucks’ offensive engine for a few seasons now.
Could a guy like Martin Necas have been part of the deal? Sebastian Aho? Andrei Svechnikov?…
You’re not Jesperi Kotkaniemi, are you?
David Pagnotta believes that KK’s name and that of Necas were part of the negotiations:
I believe names like Martin Necas and Jesper Kotkaniemi were discussed from Carolina’s end. This first occurred over week ago, prior to my initial contract offer report last week.

Elias Pettersson collected 102 points last season and he might still reach the 100-point plateau by the end of the campaign.
He is in the process of giving himself the tools to sign one of the most lucrative contracts in the NHL… And he deserves all the money that will be paid to him.
It just remains to be seen if his contract will be signed with the Canucks… Or with another team in the league. Remember that at the end of this season, he will become a free agent with compensation (and he will be entitled to arbitration).
