Rick Tocchet: thanks for having me. It’s definitely been a challenging stretch, especially losing guys like Hughes and Pettersson, who are such big parts of our team. But I’m encouraged by the way the guys have stepped up. We’ve had some tough losses, but we’re fighting through it. Hughes is back at practice, and that’s a huge boost for us.
Archyde: Speaking of Hughes, he’s been a game-time decision for tonight’s matchup against the Canadiens. What’s the latest on his status, and how confident are you that he’ll be ready to go?
Tocchet: Quinn’s progressing well. He was out there on the first power-play unit during practice, which is a good sign. We’ll make the final call after warmups, but he’s definitely a possibility. We’re being cautious, though—we don’t want to rush him back and risk further injury.
Archyde: and what about Elias Pettersson? He’s been skating but didn’t participate in special teams drills. Is he close to returning?
Tocchet: Petey’s still day-to-day. He’s skating and working hard, but he’s not quite ready for game action yet. We’ll keep evaluating him, but for tonight, he’s out. It’s tough because he’s such a dynamic player, but we want to make sure he’s 100% before he comes back.

tocchet: It’s been significant. Quinn is our engine on the back end—he drives our transition game and generates so much offense. Without him, our defensemen have had to step up, and it’s been an adjustment. Petey, obviously, is a huge part of our offense. We’ve had to rely on other guys to fill those roles, and it’s been a learning experience for everyone.
Archyde: Dakota Joshua is another player who’s been sidelined. How big of a loss is he for the team, and what’s the timeline for his return?
Tocchet: Dakota’s been a key contributor for us, especially with his physicality and energy. He’s out week-to-week, but it’s closer to 8-9 days rather than a full three weeks. It’s a tough break, but we’ve got guys like Jonathan Lekkerimäki stepping in, and it’s an opportunity for them to show what they can do.
Archyde: The Canadiens have been on a hot streak lately, winning seven of their last nine games. What’s your approach to facing a team that’s playing with so much confidence?
Tocchet: Marty [Martin St.Louis] has done a great job with that group. They’re playing fast, they’re skilled, and they’re competing hard. For us, it’s about sticking to our game plan and staying disciplined. We’ve been in a lot of one-goal games lately, and we need to find a way to come out on the right side of those.It’s about executing in the big moments.
Archyde: You’ve made some adjustments to the forward lines, including elevating Vasily Podkolzin to the top six. What’s behind that decision?
Tocchet: Podkolzin has been playing really well lately. He’s earned this opportunity with his work ethic and his recent performances. We’re trying to find the right balance and chemistry with our lines,and he’s a guy who can bring energy and skill to that role.
Archyde: Nils Höglander has been on a bit of a hot streak, with three points in his last four games.What have you seen from him lately, and how important is it for him to keep that momentum going?
Tocchet: Nils has been great. He’s playing with confidence, and that’s huge for him. When he’s skating and using his speed, he’s a really effective player. We need him to keep building on that and contributing offensively.
