Canton Uri: Heavy thunderstorm triggers alarm – Axenstrasse closed until further notice

Axenstrasse had to be closed at 7.30 p.m. on Tuesday evening, as the Schwyz cantonal police posted on Twitter. Monitoring instruments have detected terrain movements in the Gumpisch section of road. As a result, the sensors of the safety nets above Axenstrasse also triggered, writes the Uri cantonal police in a press release. The section of road had to be closed immediately and the vehicles had to turn back. According to the first findings of the canton police, no one was injured and neither the road nor the bridge was damaged.

Due to the heavy rain, rockfalls/debris flows cannot be ruled out at the moment. For safety reasons, the Axenstrasse will therefore remain closed to traffic between the Flüelen roundabout and the Wolfsprung junction until further notice. As soon as the weather conditions permit, the situation on site will be assessed by specialists, according to the Uri cantonal police.

The police recommends paying attention to the signs and bypassing the closed road over a large area via the Seelisberg tunnel and Lucerne.
