Canton of Geneva: Woman (29) goes down in the river, man wants to help her – both are recovered dead
An accident occurred in the canton of Geneva on Thursday morning. A woman and a man have disappeared into the Arve. Towards evening the sad certainty came: The two might only be taken dead from the river.
A large-scale operation by the cantonal police and the fire and rescue service (SIS) has been taking place on the banks of the Arve in Vessy GE since Thursday morning. Several sections are closed to traffic and the police are blocking access roads, as the “Tribune de Genève” writes.
On Thursday at around 11.15 a.m., the Geneva cantonal police were alerted that a 29-year-old woman had gone under in the Arve near the Vessy pumping station, as she reports. An unknown man rushed to the woman’s aid and has also been missing since then.
A large-scale search operation was then launched. The police, fire brigade and rescue service (SIS) and a Rega helicopter responded to the scene. Several sections were closed to traffic and the police blocked access roads, as the “Tribune de Genève” writes.
Finally, at 7.30 p.m., the spokesman for the judiciary, Olivier Francey, announced that the bodies of the two victims had been found by divers. The cause of death is now being investigated.
Was there a power leak?
The “Tribune de Genève” continues to write that an electrical accident might be at the forefront of the accident. A news scout also reports that there is said to have been a power leak at the pumping station. The missing woman is said to be a police officer, the man a member of the fire department. The woman is said to have tried to save her dog from the water when it jumped on the foot.
